The Audiology program at Boston Children’s Hospital offers three fourth year externships beginning in early June until the student’s graduation the following spring. It is expected that the externs will receive 11 months of patient care experience under the supervision of licensed audiology preceptors. Applicants should be driven to pursue a career in pediatric audiology following completion of their tenure at Boston Children’s Hospital.
Externs are provided with supervision by a range of experienced pediatric audiologists. All staff hold either the ASHA CCC-A or ABA Board Certification in Audiology in addition to the state license in audiology. Many staff have the ABA Pediatric Specialty Certificate, Cochlear Implant Specialty Certificate or both. Most staff members have completed the Certificate Holder-Audiology Preceptor (CHAP) training program. Supervision from an audiologist with the CCC-A is available but not guaranteed. Please discuss with your academic advisor the details of the specific supervision requirements of your program.
Externs will rotate between three sites in our audiology program. Externs will be exposed to all aspects of pediatric audiological evaluation and case management, including all behavioral audiometry techniques and electrophysiology (including frequency-specific threshold estimation by ABR). The externship year is comprised of a focus on diagnostic services in our Boston, Waltham and Weymouth locations. Externs will participate in hearing aid fittings in our Boston site along with Hearing Assistance Technology selection and determining educational accommodations for children with hearing loss which occurs at all sites. Cochlear implant mapping is a component of the rotations in both our Waltham and Weymouth sites, with a focus on CI in our Waltham location.
It is expected that externs will come with extensive pediatric audiology experience and be facile with all behavioral test techniques. Applicants should also have experience conducting frequency-specific threshold ABR assessment on infants and young children. Upon completion of training it is expected the extern will be competent to provide detailed assessment and audiologic case management of complex pediatric patients.

Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
•Extensive experience in all facets of pediatric audiometric evaluation including BOA, VRA, CPA, tympanometry and DPOAE. •Academic background and experience with frequency-specific threshold ABR. •Academic background and experience with pediatric hearing aid fitting utilizing the DSL fitting protocol and on-ear test measures. •Academic background and interest in pediatric cochlear implants. •Professional interpersonal skills with parents, children, and preceptors.
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
•Proficient and independent in all facets of the diagnostic process including testing, interpretation and counseling. •Experience working with children with complex medical conditions and diagnoses. •Experience working with children and families from other countries and cultures. •Experience working with multi-disciplinary teams. •Experience with hearing aid fitting, Hearing Assistance Technology and educational recommendations for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. •Experience with maternal and child health policies and laws, multi-cultural and disadvantaged families and social policy through the LEND (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities) Fellowship program.

Yes Audiology externs are expected as part of their participation in the LEND program, to perform a research project that culminates in a poster presentation at the annual EHDI meeting. Additional research opportunities may be available for students with interest in research pending the availability of supervision.
Continuing education opportunities?
Yes Audiology externs are also enrolled in the LEND (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities) Fellowship program through the Institute for Community Inclusion. This leadership training is one day per week from September to May and involves social policy and public health training. Yes Our Waltham center is approximately ten miles from the main Boston hospital campus. It is accessible by a hospital shuttle van. Our Weymouth center is approximately sixteen miles from the main campus and accessible by public transportation.

Universities must have an educational training contract on file with Boston Children's Hospital. Upon being offered the externship, students should put the clinical coordinator for the university in contact with our Coordinator for Education and Training. During the externship, communication with the university along with required evaluation forms will occur as needed and required.

Following the phone interview, a select group will be invited for either an onsite or online face-to-face interview in the first week of November.
