University of Rochester Medicine - Audiology is a large hospital-based University teaching facility. We provide both clinical and research services to the greater Rochester Community. Our mission includes a dedication to furthering the education of future audiologists. We take two 4th year AuD extern per academic year. Externs will have the opportunity to rotate between both a Pediatric Audiology/ENT office as well as our Main out-patient office where we see a variety of patient through the lifespan.
This externship placement is for the best and most skilled 4th year AuD externs. Employment is for usually 11 months (June-May)and follows the academic calendar

Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
-Basic knowledge and considerable experience with pure-tone audiometric testing for adults and children to include masking when appropriate-Basic knowledge and considerable experience with Speech Audiometry testing to include masking when appropriate-Basic knowledge of Hearing Aids and hearing aid evaluations and fittings using Noah and manufacturer software -Basic knowledge with both Otoacoustic Emission and Auditory Brainstem Response testing procedures
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
-Ability to perform comprehensive diagnostic audiologic evaluations for both pediatric and adult populations-Ability to perform newborn hearing screenings (OAE and ABR)-Ability to perform hearing aid evaluations, fittings, and appropriate follow-up care.-Perform in-house hearing aid repairs as appropriate-Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the cochlear implant evaluation and mapping process.-Perform and interpret central auditory processing testing

Yes Our program provides the opportunity for Au.D. Externs to apply for the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) program. LEND is a federally-funded, educational grant program.

Yes Students will be sent to conferences and meetings for continuing education as appropriate.
Travel to satellite centers required?
Yes UR Medicine Audiology has 4 offices. The main site is located at Clinton Woods (outpatient facility) and houses both ENT and Audiology. There is also an office located in the hospital proper at 601 Elmwood Ave, Rochester NY 14642 and at Highland Hospital. There is a Pediatric Audiology/ENT office presently under construction near Strong Memorial Hospital. The distance between locations is less than 3 miles. The plan is to have each extern spend equal amounts of time between the pediatric office and our main outpatient office. Some time will also be spent at the Hospital participating in testing infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care unit.
