The Department of Otolaryngology and Communicative Sciences at the University of Mississippi Medical Center(UMMC) is now accepting applications for students interested in a well-rounded 4th year externship for the 2018-2019 academic year. At UMMC we strive to provide externs with a diverse clinical and didactic experience serving individuals of all ages with hearing and balance disorders. Such experiences include:
· Diagnostic evaluations for newborn, pediatric, adult and geriatric individuals, which includes both behavioral and electrophysiological testing
· Selection, fitting, and verification of amplification devices, including hearing aids, assisted listening devices, bone conduction implants, and cochlear implants
· Evaluation and treatment for patients with tinnitus
· Evaluation and treatment of patients with dizziness, vertigo or imbalance
· Intraoperative monitoring

Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
Applicants should have emerging independence with diagnostic testing and basic hearing aid knowledge. Good report writing skills, professionalism, and an eagerness to learn are preferred.
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
- Proficiency with diagnostic testing and hearing aid selection/fitting/verification, advanced skills working with cochlear implants and balance testing. - Excellent report writing skills. - Excellent patient rapport. - Confident clinic decision making skills.

Yes Externs will rotate through our satellite clinic, which is approximately 9 miles from the main campus.

Letters of Recommendation Resume Transcript Letter of request/intent Application materials are due Monday, October 2, 2017. All applicants will be expected to attend an in-person interview at UMMC on Friday, October 27, 2017 (funding for travel and accommodations is not available). Formal written invitation to interview will be emailed to the applicant as soon as all required materials are received. The interview day will include tours of the various clinics, Q & A with current and former 4th year externs, and opportunities to meet with several preceptors.
