The Audiology Department at Children’s Hospitals of MN is seeking a Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) student to complete a 12 month pediatric externship. The candidate will be highly motivated, flexible, a strong team player and have the desire for a career in pediatric audiology. Competency in adult diagnostics and amplification are prerequisite. Applicants will have completed their university coursework related to pediatrics and will have completed one or more pediatric practicum placements. A primary preceptor will be assigned, but the extern will have the opportunity to work with many pediatric audiologists and multi-disciplinary teams across three campuses. Services are provided in both inpatient and outpatient, interdisciplinary clinical settings. This is a full-time position with clinical emphasis.
The following are skills the extern will be expected to demonstrate during their clinical externship.
Independently perform diagnostic hearing evaluations including: otoscopy, tympanometry, acoustic reflexes, BOA, VRA, and CPA as well as speech testing using standard and pediatric testing methods.
Independently perform OAE evaluations (Distortion Product and Transient Evoked) and ABR evaluations (sedated and unsedated).
Independently complete pediatric hearing aid evaluations and fittings with conventional and bone conduction hearing aids.
Independently perform listening checks and troubleshooting of hearing aids, assistive listening devices and FM systems.
Identify appropriate pediatric candidates for cochlear implantation.
Gain competency in cochlear implant evaluations, initial stimulations, mapping and rehabilitation of children with implants.
Gain competency in patient, family, and caregiver education and counseling.
Gain competency in the accompanying written documentation and verbal communication needed to administer care.
Understand and inform parents in an unbiased manner regarding educational and communication options in the community.

Pass the national Praxis exam prior to the beginning of the externship.
Obtain a temporary MN state license.
The extern is solely responsible for obtaining temporary licensure. All paperwork must be completed and processed through the MN Department of Health prior to beginning the externship.
Prior to June 4th, 2018 start date, an affiliation agreement between Children’s Hospitals of MN and your university must be signed.
The extern is responsible for carrying liability insurance through their university and private health insurance.
