The University of Illinois Hospital Department of Otolaryngology, Division of Audiology is pleased to announce the availability of Au.D. externships for the 2019-2020 term.
The Department of Otolaryngology is a world-class ENT practice. The Division of Audiology has seven audiologists and one speech-language pathologist. Housed within the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary, externs gain experience at the University of Illinois Hospital, a suburban satellite office, and the Craniofacial Center.
The Division of Audiology offers comprehensive adult and pediatric diagnostic evaluations, evoked potentials, newborn hearing screening follow-up, vestibular assessment, pediatric and adult cochlear implants, auditory osseointegrated implants, hearing aids, tinnitus evaluation and treatment, aural rehabilitation, and auditory processing evaluations. Au.D. externs also have opportunities to actively participate in research projects, resident teaching and other activities of a large academic medical center.

Interested applicants must submit the following:
Letter of intent indicating proposed start/end date
Two letters of recommendation
A copy of GRE scores (unofficial copies accepted)
Official undergraduate, graduate/ Au.D. transcripts
All accepted Au.D. externship students will be required by the Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences system to complete HIPAA and medical center training, immunizations, TB testing, health screenings and background checks.
Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
Comprehensive exposure to a variety of patient populations, including pediatrics, geriatrics, and special needs. Excellent communication and time management skills are expected.
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
Externs will expect to work toward mastery of a wide variety of clinical skills, including pediatric and special needs diagnostic testing, complete hearing aid and ALD care, tinnitus assessment and management, APD assessment, vestibular assessment (VNG/ENG, VEMP, vHIT,) cochlear implant and AOI comprehensive care, and electrophysiological testing (ABR, ENoG). Externs will also gain considerable experience with report writing, coordination and collaboration of care, and management of practice operations.
