The audiology department is a multi-site clinic, offering clinical services at the main hospital in La Jolla California with 3 additional outpatient facilities in the surrounding San Diego area. Our fouth year externs work a 5 day schedule with one weekend day at the main hospital in La Jolla for a wide range of clinical experiences and patient populations. Clinical experiences include but are not limited to: hearing evaluations, cerumen management, OAEs, hearing aid selection, hearing aid fittings with real ear measures, aural rehabilitation, electrophysiology (ABR, EChog, and cervical VEMP), Comprehensive vestibular exams ( including posturography and rotational chair), bone anchored hearing aid and cochlear implant work ups and mapping, FM and assistive listening devices, Progressive Tinnitus Management exposure and ototoxic monitoring. We are part of the Polytrauma team here at the San Diego VA, and we are involved in assessment and treatment of auditory and vestibular concerns in this patient population. We have a diverse team of 18 audiologists and 10 audiology technicians, with years of experience working with audiology trainees and externs.
Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
- Diagnostic hearing exams (including OAEs, tympanometry, acoustic reflexes, acoustic reflex decay and masking- Basic hearing aid fittings with real ear measures- Basic hearing aid selection- Basic hearing aid troubleshooting- Solid report writing skills- Knowledge of electrophysiologic measurements (experience preferred but not necessary)- Knowledge of vestibular examinations (experience preferred but not necessary)
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
- Improve professionalism- Increase clinical proficiency and time management- Abilty to synthesize results and make appropriate independent clincal decisions- Increase confidence as an independent clinician
