The Center for Hearing & Speech is seeking an audiology extern for the 2019-2020 academic year. The Center for Hearing & Speech is a St. Louis-based non-profit dedicated to helping anyone living with communication disorders, regardless of cost for nearly 100 years. Our charitable programs provide hearing aids and speech-language therapy to children and adults as well as hearing and vision screening in area schools. We exist to serve those with the highest level of need and the lowest ability to pay. While our mission is to ensure low-income individuals receive these essential services, we offer the same high-quality care to every client of any income level. We are a proud member of the United Way of Greater St. Louis, and rely on the generous support of private foundations, business partners and individual donors to continue our mission to help under-served populations in our region.
We provide the complete range of diagnostic and habilitative hearing-related services for all levels of hearing loss. We serve children and adults from birth to geriatric years. Our population comes primarily from the Greater St. Louis area, but also from surrounding regions of western and southern Missouri as well as Illinois.
The Au.D. extern collaborates with our three full-time audiologists, working towards independence of patient diagnosis, treatment, and care. The clients on the Au.D. extern case load include: Industrial hearing evaluations, state mandated “annual” hearing evaluations, Medicare/private pay, Financial assistance, and RCA individuals. S/he will also be utilized as 2nd tester whenever possible.

Applicants are required to have successfully completed all academic and clinic experience requirements of their first, second and third year programs.
Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
audiometry tympanometry real ear verification measures familiarity with hearing aid software and assistive devices
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
Proficiency with multiple hearing aid manufacturers Observation of clinical audiologist appointments Perform specific tasks that assist in the efficiency and cohesiveness of our clinic.
