Island Audiology is a locally owned private audiology practice that is located on all four of the major Hawaiian Islands. We have an opening for a 4th year externship placement in Honolulu for the 2019-2020 school year.
We see mostly adult with some pediatric patients for diagnostics, amplification, tinnitus management, and hearing conservation programs. Responsibilities for the externship position will include hearing evaluations, hearing aid selection, fitting, and maintenance, tinnitus evaluations and rehabilitation, as well as various office duties.
We have openings for Honolulu, Kona and Maui placements. The Honolulu placement comes with a furnished apartment close to the office in lieu of a stipend. The other placements come with a stipend of $1,700 a month.
It is a 12 month placement, even though your program may only require 9 or 10 months of hours.
Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
The student should be able to complete an audiogram and tympanometry effectively and independently. The student should also have basic understanding in hearing aid maintenance and programming. Knowledge on tinnitus testing, real ear measurement, and specific hearing aid manufacturer software is preferred.
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
The student will learn to be independent in all parts of hearing and tinnitus evaluations, as well as hearing aid care and programming. The student will be challenged to learn the "why" behind every audiological decision in order to ensure the best possible care for their patients. The student will also get an inside look and better understanding of how to run a private audiology practice. Further, the student will be required to continue their education with regular Grand Rounds, as well as hearing aid manufacturer trainings.

Yes Externs may be required to travel to our offices on neighbor islands. Travel expenses are covered in these cases.

We service most major brands of hearing aids, such as AGX, Starkey, Oticon, Resound, Widex, Signia, Siemens, and Phonak. We serve keiki (age 5 years and older) to kupuna, including veterans with current VA referrals.
