The William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital, located in Madison, WI, Audiology department is looking for two 4th year Audiology Externs to start June of 2019. The 4th year’s focus will be on diagnostic hearing evaluations, hearing aid evaluations, hearing aid and assistive listening device fittings, hearing aid follow-up appointments as well as assisting with the hearing aid walk-in clinic. The 4th year Externs will be responsible for returning patient phone calls, cleaning/stocking the clinic and performing biologic checks on the equipment, hearing aid trouble shooting, and mentoring 2nd and 3rd year students. The externs will be involved with Telehealth appointments, ABRs, and VNGs. In addition, the extern will have some exposure to OAEs, CAPD testing, CI programming, and will have the opportunity to observe an ear surgery performed by ENT. The extern will also observe other specialty clinics such as low vision, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology including voice clinic, swallow studies, and cognitive assessments; polytrauma clinic, etc.
Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
Must be able to complete otoscopy and identify abnormalities, diagnostic hearing evaluations, immittance, hearing aid troubleshooting, hearing aid fittings, and hearing aid programming.

In addition to honing all of the above skills, the externs will be expected to gain proficiency with CIs, ABRs, VNG, central testing, and OAEs.

Yes We regularly have hearing aid representatives come in to discuss their products. Externs are also allowed to attend one off-site training.
