The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) in affiliation with Froedtert Hospital (FMLH) is offering a 52 week audiology 4th year externship. Students can expect a well-rounded experience with an emphasis on implantable technologies. The clinical experiences include diagnostic evaluation; auditory evoked potentials; vestibular testing; tinnitus evaluation and management; cochlear implant evaluation, programming, and follow-up; hearing aid fitting and follow-up; and bone conduction implant evaluation, fitting and follow-up. A minimum of 50% of the externship will focus on implantable technologies. This experience will primarily be with the adult population.

Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
Students should have a diverse range of clinical experiences. Students should be comfortable with basic audiometric testing,obtaining case history, and should possess a basic understanding of hearing aids. We are looking for a motivated student with an interest in implantable technologies. We value critical thinking and a willingness to learn.
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
Over the course of the year, we expect the extern to become proficient and independent in comprehensive hearing and vestibular assessments and be competent in hearing aid consultation, fitting, verification, and validation. The extern will also become proficient in the evaluation, programming, and follow-up of cochlear implants and bone conduction implants. The student will gain confidence in tinnitus evaluations and basic tinnitus management/counseling as well as with evoked potentials.

A signed agreement between the university or college the student is attending and MCW and FMLH must be signed prior to the start of the externship.

Steps for the student/university to follow in the application process:
August/mid-September: Accepting applications. Please include letter of intent, resume, three letters of recommendation, and unofficial transcript.
Mid-September-October: Interviews will take place.
October: Externship offer will be extended. Signed contracts must be in place between the student's university and both MCW and FMLH.
