The Medical College of Wisconsin in affiliation with Children's Hospital of Wisconsin offers a 52 week competency based fourth year placement for Doctor of Audiology students at a pediatric facility with an emphasis on implantable technologies. Externs will have a primary supervisor but also have an opportunity to learn from many audiologists at the main campus and affiliated clinics. Clinical experiences include pediatric diagnostics, amplification fitting and follow-up with infants and children of all ages, electrophysiology, auditory processing evaluation, newborn hearing screening, and cochlear implant evaluation and programming.
Prospective candidates should have an affinity for the pediatric population and the ability to work in a fast paced environment.

Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
Students should have a diverse range of clinical experiences. * Diagnostic audiology experience with patients ages birth to 18 years.* Experience with hearing testing of special needs population.* Experience with hearing aid consultation, fitting, and follow-up * Experience or familiarity with assistive listening devices such as FM systems.* Knowledge of objective electrophysiologic assessment (ABR, OAE testing) * Experience with cochlear implant candidacy evaluation and post-implant follow- up and assessment.* Experience with verification of hearing aids.
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
During the course of the externship period, the student will be expected to show initiative in a fast paced, dynamic work environment. Student will transition from testing under supervision to leading patient appointments and complete evaluations with minimal guidance from supervisors.

Steps for the student/university to follow in the application process:
August 1-September 15, 2019: Application period open. Please include cover letter, resume, transcript (unofficial is sufficient) and two letters of recommendation. October 2019: Interviews will be scheduled and completed.October/November 2019: Externship site offer will be extended (MCW/CHW will send contracts to the institution of matriculation. A signed contract must be obtained in order for externship to take place)
