The Mercy Hospital St. Louis Audiology Externship Program located in St. Louis, Missouri includes diagnostics, electrophysiology, aural rehabilitation, and newborn hearing screening. Other programs at Mercy Hospital that externs may have exposure to include cochlear implants and osseointegrated device fittings, intraoperative monitoring and central auditory processing evaluations. Our externship program is known for its emphasis on mentoring, and our department is unique by offering various settings within one externship. Those settings include outpatient pediatric and adult diagnostics and hearing aids, infant ABR (non-sedated and sedated), osseointegrated devices and cochlear implants, a fast-paced pediatric ENT clinic, Mercy Craniofacial Team and pediatric ENT intraoperative monitoring.

Phone interviews are generally scheduled in October and offers are typically made October-November. Contracts will be reviewed by legal departments of both parties after student is accepted. We do not perform onsite interviews prior to making an offer, therefore if the student requires a site visit prior to accepting a potential offer, it is recommended a visit be scheduled prior to the application deadline.

Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
*Self-motivation *Excellent organizational skills *Able to work as part of a high functioning team *Strong interest in pediatric and adult populations *Previous experience with pediatric population is preferred *Pure tone audiometry and basic masking procedures * Basic hearing aid trouble shooting
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
* Perform accurate adult diagnostic audiograms * Perform accurate pediatric diagnostics including CPA and VRA testing. * Perform accurate sleep-deprived ABR on infant population. * Fit and dispense hearing aids to adult population. * Perform newborn hearing screenings. * Be exposed to Intraoperative Monitoring. * Participate in a Craniofacial Team. * Function as a part of a diverse Audiology Department in a large hospital setting.
