We are seeking applicants for a 12-month audiology externship at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon. The externship is offered through collaboration between the Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Doernbecher Children's Hospital, and the Child Development and Rehabilitation Center, which are all part of Oregon Health and Science University. The audiology extern will participate as a long-term trainee in the Oregon Leadership in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) Program, attending weekly interdisciplinary seminars, participating in community outreach projects, and a clinical research project.
Externs will gain clinical experience in a wide variety of audiologic services, including diagnostic evaluations of infants, children, adolescents and adults, hearing aid services (pediatric and adult), bone anchored hearing systems (pediatric and adult), auditory brainstem response evaluations, interdisciplinary evaluation of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities and complex medical conditions, ototoxicity monitoring, vestibular assessment, and cochlear implants (pediatric and adult). All audiologists at OHSU have the ASHA CCC-A.

The audiology extern candidate must be enrolled in an accredited Doctor of Audiology program. Successful candidates should demonstrate the ability to work within a fast-paced setting and work closely with other clinicians. Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
-Basic audiologic evaluations for adults, adolescents and older children -Some experience in behavioral evaluations of infants and young children -Otoscopy, tympanometry, acoustic reflex measurement -Experience with otoacoustic emissions -Earmold impressions
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
-Developmentally appropriate diagnostic evaluations for infants and young children and persons with neurodevelopmental disabilities -Hearing device selection, fitting, verification (REM, RECD) and orientation -Auditory brainstem response testing (neurodiagnostic and threshold measurement) -Participate in cochlear implant evaluation process, device selection, mapping -Participate in clinical research -Interdisciplinary teamwork -Counseling patients and caregivers about hearing loss and discussing recommendations for intervention/rehabilitation -Care coordination with early intervention and educational programs
