Seattle Children’s Hospital is offering a 12-month Audiology Externship beginning June 2020 to a qualified candidate looking for a challenging and fast-paced pediatric experience. The qualified candidate will be a highly motivated individual coming from a 4-year AuD program who is excited about a career in pediatric audiology. The extern should be a strong team player who is mature and responsible, an effective communicator, and able to demonstrate the core values of compassion, excellence, innovation, collaboration, equity and integrity. Our clinic offers comprehensive, family-centered care to a diverse population which will provide the extern with a well rounded clinical experience. Seattle Children’s Hospital is an academic medical center located in the Pacific Northwest. Seattle Children’s Hospital serves the entire Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho region. We currently have audiology clinics in Seattle, Bellevue and Everett, WA. Our audiologists work with patients directly scheduled in Audiology from multiple internal and external referral sources as well as resourcing with other teams such as Otolaryngology, Craniofacial, and inpatient services. Clinical experiences during the externship will include:
Electrophysiologic testing during natural sleep and under anesthesia
Newborn hearing screening
Hearing device dispensing including: hearing aids, bone conducted sound processors, FM systems
Cochlear implant programming and follow up
Experience working with multidisciplinary teams and community programs
The AuD extern will divide their experience between the main hospital campus in Seattle, the Bellevue Clinic and Surgery Center, and the North Clinic in Everett. The extern will have a mentor, a primary clinical supervisor, and will have the opportunity to work with multiple audiologists. All preceptors maintain ASHA certification and provide 100% supervision.
Students must be enrolled in a four-year AuD program to apply for a 4th year externship at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Candidates must have successfully completed all required coursework and clinical placements up to the application deadline and the applicant selected must maintain successful completion of coursework and clinic placements through the start of the externship.

Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
•Solid diagnostic testing skills, including successful completion of at least one pediatric rotation. •Working knowledge/some experience with BAER, OAE, hearing device programming and fitting, and early intervention services for children with hearing loss. •Interest in pediatric cochlear implant, aural habilitation, and multidisciplinary teams. •Professional interactions with patients, families, supervisors and other care team members
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
•Proficient diagnostic audiologic testing, interpretation, and counseling with typically developing as well as medically complex and/or developmentally delayed infants and children ages 0 – 21 years and their families. •Competence in selection, programming, verification, and validation of various hearing devices. •Planning and participation in appropriate aural habilitation services. •Ability to function collaboratively in teams within and across departments. •Attendance and participation in staff and team meetings. •Learn about and participate in continuous improvement and innovation activities.

Prior to the start of the externship, an affiliation agreement must be completed between Seattle Children's and the University. Participation in the externship at SCH is contingent upon successful establishment of the affiliation agreement. In addition to this requirement, the University will need to provide the Preceptor Team with all necessary assessment forms and deadlines for completion. Regular check in with the student's faculty liaison.
