Arizona Hearing Center – Office of Dr. Mark Syms is a private neurotology practice. We specialize in advanced surgical and non-surgical treatments for hearing loss and ear disorders. From our state of the art facility in downtown Phoenix, we help patients improve their quality of life by providing individualized treatment options in a comfortable, welcoming environment. Services we provide include: diagnostic audiology, counseling, evoked potentials, cochlear implants, bone anchored implants, traditional hearing aids, and Earlens. The audiologists, physician assistant, and surgeon work collaboratively to optimize patient care.
Our partner practice, Arizona Hearing Center, is a private audiology practice located in the same building with an additional satellite location in Sun City West, Arizona. There is an additional 4th year experience at Arizona Hearing Center for exposure to all aspects of dispensing audiology including: counseling, traditional hearing aid fittings, CROS and BiCROS, Earlens, real ear measures, marketing, and daily business practices.
We are looking for colleagues who want to be exceptional at the practice of audiology. This is an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge and exposure to both the medical and private practice aspects of audiology.
Two positions will be medical audiology-focused at the office of Dr. Mark Syms and one position will be dispensing-focused at Arizona Hearing Center.
We are seeking highly motivated students dedicated to providing excellent hearing healthcare to join us for their externship.
Application Requirements: Letter of Intent, Resume/CV, Un-official Transcript, and 3 Letters of Recommendation. Interviews will then be setup via Google Hangouts, Skype, Face Time, etc. or in person accordingly.

Yes Our externs can participate are encouraged to attend conventions and manufacturer sponsored training.
Expected hours/days a week:
40 hours per week
Travel to satellite centers required?
Yes If desired, additional hearing aid experience is available at Sun City West location.
Local students preferred:
Does the externship site provide orientation to relevant clinical policies and procedures?
Does the externship site provide instructions about patient's rights and providing patient education?
Does the externship site provide orientation to quality assessment, quality assurance and quality improvement?
Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
Basic audiometric testing (including masking), immitance tests, real ear measures, earmold impressions, hearing aids and troubleshooting, basic counseling skills, evoked potential terminology and understanding of tests.
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
Increased speed of audiometric testing, assess candidacy for different hearing technologies, advanced counseling skills, improved skills with fitting and programming implantable devices, otoacoustic emissions, and electrophysiologic testing, including ABR, ENoG, and ECochG.
Clinical opportunities that will be given to the extern:
Pediatric evaluations: infant/toddler
Pediatric evaluations: school-age
Adult hearing evaluations
Auditory processing evaluations
Evoked potential assessments
Intra-operative monitoring cases
Hearing aids dispensed
Hearing aid selection/fitting
Audiologic rehabilitation (group or individualized)
Cochlear implant evaluations
Cochlear implant rehabilitation
Yes We regularly participate in studies sponsored by device manufacturers. Externs are also welcome to initiate their own research endeavor.
Consortium or collaborative arrangements with other sites?
Yes Rotations can be discussed for areas not provided to our clinic.
How frequently will the externship site communicate with the university during the externship?
Communication or other support do expected or required from the university during the externship:
Communication and documentation for grading.
