The Audiology Department at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago is seeking Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) students to complete a challenging and exciting 12-month pediatric externship. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, a strong team player, and have a strong desire for a career as a pediatric audiologist. Applicants will have completed their university coursework related to pediatrics, be competent in performing diagnostic audiologic procedures on adults, and have completed clinical placements that offered experience with pediatric testing and habilitation. The objective of this educational externship is to provide a variety of clinical experiences to develop the skills necessary for a career as a pediatric audiologist. The extern can expect to receive intensive training and mentoring from an experienced staff of clinical audiologists. During the placement the extern will have the opportunity to apply academic principles within a clinical practice and learn to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Our institution is following the Audiology Clinical Education Network (ACEN) timeline. Application materials must be submitted by 9/10/21. Our interviews will take place on 10/1/21 and externship offers will be extended on 10/20/21 at noon.

Continuing education opportunities?
Yes Occasional training by hearing aid and cochlear implant manufacturers at Lurie Children's main campus in Chicago. The externs will be given time to attend continuing education as they wish, however no financial support is provided.
Expected hours/days a week:
Travel to satellite centers required?
Yes The Au.D. externs will complete most of their 50 week placement at our main campus in our downtown Chicago location. Up to two days per week may be at an off-site facility in the suburbs. The off-site facilities are up to 25 miles from the downtown location.

Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:

Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
•Gain experience managing pediatric patients •Gain independence when working with children and their families •Gain experience counseling families regarding diagnosis and management of hearing loss and interventions •Gain exposure to cochlear implant candidacy and post-operative management •Gain experience interacting with a wide variety of medical professionals

About Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago
The Audiology Department at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago serves patients birth through 18 and their families and provides full diagnostic and rehabilitative services on an in-patient and out-patient basis including: newborn hearing screenings, unsedated and sedated Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) and Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR), otoacoustic emissions (OAE), behavioral audiological evaluation using Visual Reinforcement (VRA), Conditioned Play (CPA) and conventional audiometric techniques, hearing aid evaluation, selection, fitting and verification, cochlear implant candidacy evaluation, device selection, mapping and troubleshooting as well as aural habilitation services provided by trained speech/language pathologists. Many of our patients have multiple medical conditions and can be difficult to test.
