About the Area
Houston, located in the southeast corner of Texas near Galveston Bay, is the largest city in the state—and the fourth biggest in the country. An early capital of the Texas Republic, this sprawling metropolitan area is synonymous with oil fields and space exploration, but has plenty more to offer people of all ages. It ranks first in total park space among the nation’s 10 largest cities, with an impressive 23.6 acres for every 1,000 residents. The city’s temperate climate makes outdoor activities popular year-round; favorites include biking, boating, golfing, and cooling off at the lake, beach, or one of the region’s many themed water parks. Sports fans can take in a professional baseball, football, basketball, or soccer game—keeping the intrastate rivalry with some of Texas' other pro teams alive. History buffs can embark on an architecture tour or explore the famed Texas Independence Trail to learn about the Lone Star state’s struggle for freedom. The Museum District offers plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in culture, and over a dozen shopping areas mean even the most discriminating shopper is sure to find something appealing. You’ve probably worked up an appetite after all this activity, and with some 10,000 restaurants offering cuisine from every corner of the globe, you won’t walk away hungry. With a booming economy, wealth of attractions, and culturally diverse population, Houston represents the best of Texas!
