The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Department of Otolaryngology service is recognized as a leading clinical and research center for audiology and cochlear implantation, balance and facial nerve disorders, head and neck cancer, sleep disorders, and other specialties. Combining expert and compassionate care with state-of-the-art medical resources, UT Southwestern offers accurate diagnostic services and effective treatments that make an important difference in patients' lives.
The UT Southwestern, Department of Otolaryngology, Division of Communicative and Vestibular Disorders offers externship positions for audiology graduate students. The position starts in June.
Audiologists at UT Southwestern provide services at multiple clinics: UTSW clinic (an outpatient facility for primarily adult services), Parkland Memorial Hospital (outpatient clinic/inpatient care for adults and Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program), Clements University Hospital, Moncrief Medical Center at Fort Worth (an outpatient facility for adult services), and Children's Medical Center (main hospital/outpatient clinic in Dallas, Perot outpatient clinic in Dallas, and outpatient clinic/ho...spital in Plano). We provide a wide range of services including diagnostic audiometric evaluations, vestibular examinations, eletrophysiological testing, hearing aid, tinnitus, bone anchored hearing implants, cochlear and auditory brainstem implant services, and newborn hearing screening. We work with all age groups, from newborn to adults. Details of services provided at each site are provided below:
UTSW clinic (outpatient ENT office serving the whole age range, with a primary focus on adult care)

*Oversight and management, including some screening and follow-up testing, for newborn hearing screening program.
Children's Medical Center facilities (Dallas and Plano)
*Behavioral audiograms, utilizing developmentally appropriate test procedures
*OAEs
*Infant hearing screening
*Unsedated clinic and sedated OR ABRs
*Pediatric amplification services: Dallas main outpatient clinic only
Moncrief Medical Center at Fort Worth
*Diagnostic hearing evaluations
*ABR
*EcoG
*ENG/VNG

Clements University Hospital
*Audiograms (typically ototoxic monitoring for CF patients)
*OAE's
Externs will have a 6 month adult placement at UTSW clinic/Parkland and a 6 months pediatric placement at Childrens. In addition to the detailed services provided at each site, the extern will have rotations in Cochlear implants, Tinnitus, OR ABR, clinic ABR, and Parkland Newborn Nursery. Externs will have an opportunity to observe a physical therapist who specializes in vestibular rehabilitation, OR (Otology), ENT clinic, and in the Family Focused Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children.
