Founded in 1924 Northeast Hearing & Speech (NHS) is a community-based not for profit speech and hearing center located on the beautiful coastline in Portland, Maine. Our 15 speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and 3 audiologists provide speech-language therapy and evaluations, audiological evaluations and dispense hearing aids. Audiology services include diagnostic hearing evaluations for all ages, newborns to the most elderly, beginning with infants who have been referred following universal newborn hearing screening in the birthing hospitals. Our diagnostic pediatric evaluations include unsedated ABR, OAE, VRA & conditioned play with a team of two audiologists for all children 0-3 and others with known disabilities. Both pediatric and adult clients are provided with diagnostic evaluations, hearing aid dispensing & assistive technology. We are seeking a 4th year audiology student to complete an externship at NHS and become a LEND trainee with our partner, the University of New England.

Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
The candidate must have the ability to: participate in pediatric testing as an assistant with emerging ability to test; complete standard adult hearing evaluation with fair independence; experience with observing and assisting with OAE, ABR, VRA, and CPA evaluations; participate in trouble shooting hearing aids with guidance and support; participate in hearing aid fittings and follow ups with guidance
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
The candidate will gain independence in: -pediatric audiology testing (OAE, ABR, VRA, CPA) -adult audiological testing -hearing aid selection, fitting, follow up, and troubleshooting -accessories for adults and students in educational and occupational settings -team work with a variety of professionals including audiologists, speech-language pathologists, LEND trainees, & school personnel
