The Audiology program at Boston Children's Hospital offers two final-year externships beginning in early June and ending May of the following year. Externs will receive 11 months of patient care experience under the supervision of licensed audiology preceptors. Applicants should be driven to pursue a career in pediatric audiology following completion of their tenure at Boston Children’s Hospital.
Externs are provided with supervision by a range of experienced pediatric audiologists. All staff hold either the ASHA CCC-A or ABA Board Certification in Audiology in addition to the Massachusetts state license in audiology. Many staff have the ABA Pediatric Specialty Certificate, Cochlear Implant Specialty Certificate or both. Most staff members have completed the Certificate Holder-Audiology Preceptor (CHAP) training program. Supervision from an audiologist with the CCC-A is not guaranteed.
Externs rotate between two sites in our audiology program. Externs will be exposed to all aspects of pediatric audiological evaluation and case management, including all behavioral audiometry techniques and objective test measures, selection of hearing assistance technology, and determination of educational accommodations for children with hearing loss. The externship year begins with focused training on diagnostic services in our Boston and Waltham locations. Subsequent rotations focus on hearing aid fittings and inpatient services (Boston) and cochlear implant mapping (Waltham).
We expect that externs will come with substantial pediatric audiology experience and have basic competence with all behavioral test techniques. Applicants should also have an understanding of and exposure to frequency-specific threshold ABR assessment on infants and young children. Upon completion of training, we expect the extern to be competent in providing detailed assessment and audiologic case management of complex pediatric patients.
We will be voluntarily following the application timeline proposed by the Audiology Clinical Education Network.
Applicants should submit their letter of intent, curriculum vitae, graduate transcripts (official or unofficial) and three Boston Children’s Hospital recommendation forms. We recommend that at least one of the recommendations be from an audiologist who supervised a pediatric placement and can speak to your relative strengths in this area.
Additionally, applicants must submit a one-page, single-spaced response to the following: “Describe a clinical situation that you have observed or participated in that will have a lasting impact on you professionally”.
