The Center for Hearing & Speech is a St. Louis-based non-profit dedicated to transforming lives through caring, personalized, and innovative programs that empower communication for over 100 years. Our charitable programs provide audiology diagnostics, hearing aids, cochlear implant services, and speech-language therapy to children and adults. In addition we provide hearing and vision screening in area schools. While our mission is to ensure low-income individuals receive these essential services, we offer the same high-quality care to every client of any income level. We are a proud member of the United Way of Greater St. Louis, and rely on the generous support of private foundations, business partners and individual donors to continue our mission to help under-served populations in our region.
We serve children and adults from birth to geriatric years. Our population comes primarily from the Greater St. Louis area, but also from surrounding regions of western and southern Missouri, as well as Illinois.
The Au.D. extern collaborates with our four full-time audiologists, all of whom hold CCCs from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. They will work towards independence of patient diagnosis, treatment, and care. The clients on the Au.D. extern case load include: Industrial hearing evaluations, state mandated “annual” hearing evaluations, private pay, and financial assistance. S/he will also be utilized as 2nd tester whenever possible.
Prior to the projected June 1, 2024 start date, an affiliation agreement between The Center for Hearing & Speech and your university must be signed.

Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
*Self-motivation * Takes initiative * Attention to detail *Excellent organizational skills *Able to work as part of a high functioning team *Strong interest in adult populations *Previous experience with pediatric population is preferred *Experience in completing diagnostic hearing evaluations , including otoscopy, tympanometry, acoustic reflexes, and otoacoustic emissions in adult and pediatric populations. * Have some experience completing hearing assessments using BOA, VRA, and CPA techniques. * Experience working with developmentally disabled population preferred. * Comfortable working with third party interpreters preferred. * Independently complete listening checks on hearing aids and able to complete hearing aid troubleshooting. * Be comfortable making earmold impressions.
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
The extern will be able to demonstrate the following skills by the end of his/her externship:
*Perform diagnostic hearing evaluations including objective measures using standard and pediatric testing methods. * Conduct community/school hearing screenings. * Independently complete adult hearing aid evaluations and fittings, utilizing subjective and objective measures. * Independently perform listening checks on hearings aids and personal FM systems. * Function as a part of a diverse Audiology Department in a busy community clinic setting. * Develop skills and knowledge in identifying candidates for cochlear implantation and perform candidate evaluations, mapping, and follow-up assessments. * Become competent at describing audiological test results to families, patients, and other professional team members in language that can be easily understood. * Understand and inform patients in an unbiased approach to their communication options. * Be able to communicate needs and audiologic findings with third party organizations in regards to implications in the workplace.

Video Conference interviews are generally scheduled late September and early October. Offers are typically made by end of October. Contracts and Affiliation Agreements will be reviewed by both parties after student has accepted.
We do not perform onsite interviews prior to making an offer, therefore if the student requires an onsite visit prior to accepting a potential offer, it is recommended a visit be scheduled prior to submitting an application.
