The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Department of Otolaryngology is recognized as a leading clinical and research center for audiology and cochlear implantation, balance and facial nerve disorders, head and neck cancer, sleep disorders, and other specialties. The UT Southwestern, Department of Otolaryngology, Division of Communicative and Vestibular Disorders offers a 12-month externship for audiology graduate students. The program begins the first of June 2024 and concludes the end of May 2025.
Audiologists at UT Southwestern provide services at multiple clinics: UTSW West Campus clinic (an outpatient facility for primarily adult services), UT Southwestern Frisco (an outpatient facility for pediatrics and adults), Moncrief Medical Center at Fort Worth (an outpatient facility for primarily adult services), UT Southwestern Pediatric Group of Plano (an outpatient clinic/hospital in Plano), Children's Medical Center (main hospital/outpatient clinic in Dallas, Perot outpatient clinic in Dallas, and Prosper outpatient clinic), Parkland Memorial Hospital (outpatient clinic/inpatient care for adults and Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program), and Clements University Hospital. We provide a wide range of services including diagnostic audiometric evaluations, vestibular examinations, electrophysiological testing, amplification, tinnitus/hyperacusis, bone anchored hearing implants, cochlear and auditory brainstem implant services, and newborn hearing screening. We work with all age groups, from newborns to adults. Details of services provided at each site are listed below:

Externs will have a 6 month adult-focused placement at UTSW clinic/Parkland and a 6 month pediatric-focused placement at Childrens Medical Center, with some cross-over between each rotation to maintain skills for all age groups. In addition to the detailed services provided at each
site, the extern will have rotations in OR ABR, clinic ABR, and Parkland Newborn Nursery. Externs will have an opportunity to observe a physical therapist who specializes in vestibular rehabilitation, ENT clinic, and in the Family Focused Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children.
Competency Expectations-mastery of skills prior to clinical Externship:
*Comprehensive audiologic assessment, including pure-tone air, bone, and speech audiometry
* Tympanometry and acoustic reflex testing
*Exposure to and some competence with electrophysiologic assessment
*Exposure to and some competence with vestibular assessment
*Exposure to and some competence with hearing aid services

· Monday, September 25, 2023: Externship sites begin interviewing applicants
· Student Response Deadline for First Round Offerings: Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at 7:00pm ET
· Ongoing: Supplemental offers may be extended to students if positions are not filled
ACEN timeline allows students to respond to an offer prior to the deadline. The student has 3 choices: 1) Accept externship position and notify other sites that they have accepted another position, 2) Decline the externship offer 3) Wait to respond until the deadline on Tuesday, October 24th at 7pm ET.
