The Audiology Department at the Southern Arizona VA Medical Center is pleased to announce an Audiology Clinical Doctorate Externship. The position is located at the Tucson, Arizona. Only US citizens are eligible to apply. The appointment is not to exceed twelve months or 2080 hours. Stipend will be offered through the Office of Academic Affiliation. The Tucson VAMC Audiology Department is comprised of 5.5 ASHA certified audiologists and 3 technicians. Opportunities to work in our satellite locations also available, if desired (Casa Grande, Sierra Vista and Yuma).
At least one of the positions will be funded. Historically, funding has been available for two externs.
Clinical work will includes:
diagnostic audiologic assessment;
electrophysiologic assessment
vestibular assessment
tinnitus evaluation and management
cochlear implants and bone anchored hearing aid candidacy evaluations and management
hearing aid selection, fitting, verification and adjustment
Position is limited to those who are completing their 4th year externship before licensure in audiology. Their practicum is to be under the direct supervision of a licensed audiologist.

- Basic audiologic evaluation, hearing aid selection and fitting/orientation. - Hearing aid troubleshooting and cleaning - Comfort with obtaining Earmold Impressions and performing Cerumen management - Basic familiarity with concepts and practice of electrophysiology, vestibular, cochlear implant and tinnitus evaluation.
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
- Become proficient in audiologic evaluations, hearing aid selection, fittings & orientations, and device troubleshooting. - Increased proficiency with electrophysiologic, vestibular, cochlear implant and tinnitus evaluations. - Increased comfort with various hearing technology and accessories.
