UMass Memorial Medical Center Audiology Department offers a comprehensive externship including diagnostic and rehabilitative options spanning all ages from infants through geriatrics. We provide externs with the experience necessary to become independent clinicians in all aspects of audiology.
This is a 12-month full time externship position consisting of 4-10 hour days. The extern will rotate through two different locations obtaining a well-rounded externship experience in a busy diverse medical center. Externs will routinely collaborate with the Otolaryngology department to deliver holistic patient centered care.
Experience will entail:
-ENT clinics (Neuro-Otology and Pediatric Clinics)
-Adult/Pediatric full diagnostic evaluations
-Hearing aid fitting and programming
-Implantable device (Osseo-integrated, Cochlear Implants) consultation, activation, and optimization.
-Other experiences may include participation in OR surgical cases, a multi-disciplinary Craniofacial Clinic, and Grand Rounds.
Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree is required. Applicant must be currently enrolled in an accredited clinical Audiology doctorate (Au.D.) program. Academic requirements for degree completion must be met prior to starting the 4th year externship.

Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
Proficient in otoscopy, tympanometry, otoacoustic emissions, pure tone testing and masking. Able to take a thorough case history, evaluate results of all tests to determine validity of findings and/or need for additional testing, ability to properly counsel on test results and recommendations, open to constructive feedback by all supervisors.

The extern will work with Audiologists in all disciplines (Vestibular, Electroacoustics, Implantable Technologies, Hearing Aids, Pediatric and Adult diagnostics). We strive for a certain level of independence in all areas by the end of their externship with us.
