Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship: | 1. Completed their university coursework related to pediatrics 2. Preferred, but not a requirement, at least one or more pediatric practicum placements 3. Preferred, but not a requirement, experience with ABRs |
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship: | 1. Independently perform diagnostic hearing evaluations including: otoscopy, tympanometry, acoustic reflexes, BOA, VRA and CPA as well as speech testing using standard and pediatric testing methods 2. Independently perform OAE evaluations and unsedated ABR evaluations 3. Independently complete pediatric hearing aid evaluations and fittings with conventional and bone conduction hearing aids 4. Independently perform listening checks and troubleshooting of hearing aids 5. Identify appropriate pediatric candidates for cochlear implantation 6. Gain competency in cochlear implant evaluations, initial stimulations, mapping and rehabilitation of children with implants 7. Gain competency in patient, family, and caregiver education and counseling 8. Gain competency in the accompanying written documentation and verbal communication needed to administer care 9. Understand and inform parents in an unbiased manner regarding educational and communication options in the community |
