UNC Chapel Hill's Hearing and Communication Center is a community based hearing and balance center providing diagnostics and treatment to members of the community. Primarily an adult focused center, students will have opportunities to train along side faculty members from UNC Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences. The center provides hearing testing, hearing aid evaluation and hearing aid fitting and Audiologic Rehabilitation (including virtual AR classes).
Additionally, the clinic has a growing balance program, which will provide the student opportunities to broaden their expertise in comprehensive dizziness case history, bedside evaluation of the dizzy patient, BPPV assessment and treatment, comprehensive VNG evaluation, vHIT evaluation.
All clinical opportunities include the implementation of best practice guidelines as recommended by the American Academy of Audiology. Additionally, the 4th year extern will have some opportunities to work with school age population in hearing screening program with local school districts and at the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities completing diagnostic testing as part of multi-disciplinary program. The extern will participate in OSHA hearing screening program as well as learn about the business of audiology as the clinic functions similar to a private practice.
Please notice this is NOT a pediatric focused clinical site, but has some clinical opportunities for working with pediatrics. There are other externship opportunities within the UNC Healthcare system that are primarily pediatric focused. Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
Ability to complete the following w/ limited supervision: hearing evaluations for the adult population, hearing aid evaluations, hearing aid fitting real-ear probe mic measures, Electro-acoustic analysis, hearing aid programming, knowledge of hearing aid troubleshooting, proficiency taking earmold impressions, course work or workshop in cerumen management (preferred). Exposure to balance assessment and treatment is preferable.
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
proficiency in all above measures, as well as developing a strong business sense and learning about coding and reimbursement and importance of community outreach.
