Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship: | • Evaluating audiological function using accepted protocols for testing patients of all ages, ranging from newborn to geriatric, including effective masking techniques. • Interpreting results and counseling patients or caregivers about treatment options for hearing loss and other communication options • Making appropriate recommendations, as well as medical referrals when necessary • Documenting patient history, test results, and recommendations for follow up • Making appropriate recommendations of hearing aids and assistive listening devices, when warranted • Fitting hearing aids (all major manufacturers) and making programming adjustments as needed, including verification • Performing and interpreting electro-physiologic and special tests of the peripheral and central auditory system, including Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) testing and assessment for Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) • Hearing aid maintenance and repair, ear mold impressions, and ceriman management • Assisting with educational audiology services to the students at the Gateway School • Providing diagnostic and hearing aid services for contracted residential nursing home facilities • Maintaining clinic equipment and supplies, following all accepted universal precautions |
