| Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship: | •Accurately and independently with increasing speed and minimal supervision perform the following during Pure Tone Testing.
oGive instructions for air conduction pure tone threshold tests.
oAdminister air and bone conduction pure tone threshold tests using accepted practice techniques.
oIdentify probable vibrotactile responses to pure tome stimuli.
oInterpret findings as to type, degree, and configuration of hearing loss.
oCompute common pure tone averaging procedures.
•Accurately and independently with increasing speed and minimal supervision perform the following during Speech Testing.
oPerform the following with close supervision on routine cases.
Give instructions for Spondee Threshold (ST) tests.
Administer ST tests by Monitored Live Voice (MLV).
Give instructions for word recognition score tests.
Administer, under phones and in Sound Field (SF), word recognition tests using recorded tape presentations.
Administer, under phones and in SF, word recognition score tests by MLV.
Obtain, when appropriate, and interpret, Speech Awareness Thresholds (SAT).
oCalculate PTA and interpret the relationship between PTA and ST.
oInterpret results of word recognition score tests.
•Accurately and independently with increasing speed and minimal supervision perform the following during Masking.
oAssess when masking is needed during speech and pure tone tests.
oProvide appropriate masking associated with the each transducer (i.e. inserts, supra aural headphones)
•Accurately and independently with increasing speed and minimal supervision perform the following during Tympanometry.
oRecognize and interpret the following results of tympanometry measurements:
Physical Volume test (PVT).
Tympanogram type.
Static compliance measurement.
oPerform the following procedures:
Inspect ears with an otoscope and/or video otoscope.
Check for the presence of collapsible or prolapsed canal.
Administer instructions for tympanometry measurements.
Position the probe assembly properly to obtain a hermetic seal on most ear canals.
•Accurately and independently with increasing speed and minimal supervision perform the following during Otoacoustic Emissions.
oDisplay familiarity with the TEOAE and DPOAE stimulus and recording parameters.
oAssist in the administration of OAE evaluations.
Know how to use software of OAE computer.
oDemonstrate familiarity with TEOAE and DPOAE normative data and its application to patient data.
oInterpret OAE test results:
Identify valid OAE responses.
Use of OAE results for estimation of audiometric configuration.
Use of OAE results, with other audiometric test results, for differential diagnosis.
Knowledge of OAE protocols used for Newborn Hearing Screening.
oWrite a short narrative report on responses obtained.
•Accurately and independently with increasing speed and minimal supervision perform the following during Pediatric Behavioral Testing.
oDetermine age appropriate tests.
oAppropriately shape the behavior of the child in the test suite.
oTeach a play response to an auditory stimulus.
oAdminister behavioral observation audiometry (BOA).
oAdminister visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA).
oAdminister conditioned play audiometry.
oModify stimuli and methodology to obtain SRT and SAT.
oSelect and administer an appropriate word recognition or discrimination test.
•Accurately and independently with increasing speed and minimal supervision perform the following during Vestibular Assessment and Rehabilitation.
oBasic bed-side examination procedures
oVideo nystagmography (VNG)
oCanalith Repositioning Procedures
oBrief report-writing with appropriate recommendations
•Accurately and independently with increasing speed and minimal supervision perform the following for Amplification services.
oIdentify the components, controls, circuit types, and styles of hearing aids.
oDisplay familiarity with electroacoustic characteristics of hearing aids.
oMeasure the functional gain of hearing aids.
oAssists in performing probe tube microphone measures.
oInterpret manufacturer's hearing aid specifications.
oPerform electroacoustic measures on hearing aids.
oPerform a listening and visual inspection of hearing aids.
oPerform troubleshooting procedures.
oIdentify earmold styles and materials.
oMake earmold impressions.
oSelect and order earmolds, and earmold options as needed.
oBe able to discuss programmable and non-programmable hearing aid styles, their benefits and limitations with patients.
oDiscuss care, use, and maintenance of hearing aids with patient.
oDetermine amplification options for a patient.
oCounseling of patients and families regarding appropriate expectations of hearing aid benefits.
oComplete ordering process appropriately.
oDisplay familiarity with the candidacy criteria, components, characteristics, and programming of a BAHA.
oDisplay familiarity with the candidacy criteria, components, characteristics, and controls of Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs) |
