Potomac River Clinic (PRC) is accepting applications for an Audiology Externship.

PRC provides clinical services to the greater Washington, DC area, in addition to serving The River School, an independent school with an inclusion program for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Our mission is to equip children with hearing loss and their families with a foundation for lifelong learning through listening and spoken language. Our audiologists work closely with educators, speech pathologists, and psychologists to address the speech, language, and hearing needs of the students with hearing loss.
The audiology program provides a full range of services including natural sleep auditory brainstem response testing, behavioral hearing evaluations, hearing aid and cochlear implant evaluations and programming, as well as parent counseling.
As an Audiology Extern, you will be responsible for the following:
to assist with all audiological services provided through The Potomac River Clinic and The River School;
to assist in cochlear implant and hearing aid selection, programming, verification, troubleshooting, and consultation;
to maintain records and write reports;
to assist in school-wide hearing screenings;
to assist with the parent support group and the Parent-Infant Program;
to train and educate school personnel in the field of audiology;
to assist with data collection for various research grants;
to assist in in-service, community outreach, classroom audio distribution systems (CADS) set-up, and consultations at schools around the DC area;
to assist with billing and reimbursement
A significant desire to work with a pediatric population is essential. Previous pediatric experience, in addition to excellent clinical knowledge and confident clinical decision making skills are a must. Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility and the ability to establish a quick rapport are critical.

Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
Potomac River Clinic is a non-profit agency providing an array of services for children with hearing loss and their families. The transdisciplinary staff includes professionals in audiology, deaf education, and speech language pathology with specific expertise in the oral language development of children with hearing loss. Team members are skilled in the use of state-of-the-art hearing technology and act as coaches and guides for families to support development of auditory skills, facilitate spoken language, create supportive listening environments, and integrate listening and language into the routines of family life. Ongoing formal and informal diagnostic assessments are used to develop individualized treatment plans, to monitor progress and to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention for the child and family.
In addition to center-based therapy, Potomac River Clinic partners with public and private agencies to provide children and families with innovative programs and to support professionals in the field of hearing loss. Potomac River Clinic also works with leaders on the state and national level to advocate for issues related to early identification and intervention.
