University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center/Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital Department of Audiology offers two full time paid 4th year externships. The 52 week externship experiences will begin June 2026 through May 2027. The Department of Audiology provides comprehensive diagnostic and rehabilitative services to individuals throughout the lifespan. Our goal is to improve communication abilities of our patients. We adhere to UH's Mission, Vision and Values as well as ASHA's Code of Ethics and the Department of Audiology policies and procedures. All of our audiologists hold Certificate of Clinical Competence through ASHA.
The externships offer comprehensive experiences in pediatric and adult diagnostic and rehabilitative audiology. Externs complete rotations at our main campus and at our clinical offsite locations. Externs will gain knowledge and experience in pediatric and neuro-otology clinics, craniofacial clinic, auditory evoked potentials (sedated and natural sleep) ABR, ASSR, ECOG, VEMP, VNG, VHIT, cochlear implant evaluation and programming, cochlear implant intraoperative monitoring/physiological measures (NRT/ECAP, ESRT, ECOG), hearing aids, osseo-integrated devices, bone conduction devices, newborn hearing screenings, and ototoxic monitoring.
University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center/Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital will follow the ACEN timeline for applications. Deadline for documentation submission is September 17, 2025. Required documentation includes: Letter of interest, Three letters of recommendation, Curriculum vitae, Undergraduate and graduate transcripts are encouraged (unofficial accepted).

Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
-Pure tone air and bone conduction threshold assessment with masking -Immittance with acoustic reflex and reflex decay assessment -Knowledge of hearing aid manufacturers, assessment, dispensing, verification and troubleshooting -Knowledge of cochlear implant and BAI candidacy
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
-Universal newborn hearing screening program and management -Intra-operative cochlear implant telemetry -Obtain complete comprehensive audiogram with tympanometry and acoustic reflexes, reflex decay, otoacoustic emissions on all age groups -Comfort in use of BOA, VRA, TROCA, conditioned play and team testing -Competency in implementation of ABR, ASSR under sedation and natural sleep -Competency in vestibular assessment including VNG, VHIT, ECOG and VEMP -Competency in hearing aid selection, dispensing, programming and trouble shooting -Competency in cochlear implant selection, implant telemetry and mapping
