This is an unpaid externship; however, we are pleased to cover costs associated with the Mexico service trip and relevant audiology conferences. We understand the demands of being a student and are committed to providing flexibility with time off as needed throughout the year.

Rawls Clinical Audiology is a patient-centered private practice located in the Cherry Creek neighborhood of Denver, CO. We provide compassionate, high-quality hearing healthcare to a diverse population, including non-English speakers, incarcerated individuals, patients utilizing financial assistance programs, and underserved communities in rural Colorado.

Our externship offers robust clinical training in diagnostics, amplification, and community-based care. Students will gain experience working in both urban and rural settings—including a rural outreach clinic we travel to twice monthly—and have the option to attend a humanitarian audiology service trip to Mexico.

Services Provided:

  • Comprehensive diagnostic hearing evaluations

  • Hearing aid selection, fitting, and verification

  • Patient counseling and education

  • Hearing protection and tinnitus support

  • Home visits for patients with mobility issues

  • Physician marketing and relationship-building

  • Participation in community outreach and events

Externship Experience Includes:

  • Serving patients from all walks of life in an inclusive and welcoming environment

  • Exposure to private practice operations

  • Optional humanitarian service trip to Mexico

  • Experience with culturally and linguistically diverse populations

  • Working closely with a small, dedicated team committed to mentorship and clinical excellence

Qualifications:

  • AuD candidates in good standing from an accredited program

  • Strong diagnostic foundation and interest in amplification

  • Cultural competence and commitment to inclusive care

  • Enthusiastic, self-motivated, and eager to learn in a fast-paced private practice setting

Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship: Diagnostic testing on adults
Basic knowledge/understanding of hearing aids
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship: Administer and interpret comprehensive diagnostic audiologic evaluations for adults and older children

Fit and program a wide range of hearing aid technologies using real-ear verification and evidence-based protocols

Deliver effective patient counseling, including communication strategies, realistic expectations, and hearing aid care

Provide culturally competent care to diverse populations, including non-English speakers and underserved communities

Coordinate care for patients receiving financial assistance or navigating complex life circumstances

Participate in humanitarian outreach, including the option to join a service trip to Mexico

Conduct home visits for patients with mobility limitations

Support physician relationship-building and community marketing initiatives

Engage in outreach events and education within the broader Denver metro and rural eastern Colorado communities

Collaborate in a small, supportive team environment with mentorship focused on professional growth and autonomy

Communication or other support do expected or required from the university during the externship: We value open communication and collaborative support from the university throughout the externship year. We ask that a designated university supervisor be available for periodic check-ins, evaluations, and to provide guidance as needed. Clear expectations, timely feedback, and responsiveness to student or preceptor concerns help ensure a successful and supportive learning experience. We are happy to complete mid-year and final evaluations and welcome ongoing dialogue to promote the student's professional development.
