4th Year Audiology Externship
We offer 3 full-time paid 4th year externships that start generally in mid-May. Two of our positions focus on the subspecialties within pediatric audiology and the other position includes a Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) fellowship as well as limited subspecialties. Students may apply for one or both positions.
Externs are hired for a ~12-month competency-based experience. The externships are solely clinical. Externs will complete a rotation at the main campus and a neighborhood location. Students will have a primary preceptor at each location and participate in several specialty areas of pediatric audiology including balance assessment, electrophysiology and inpatient. Externs will also gain experience with hearing aids, cochlear implants, auditory processing evaluations and bone conduction devices. On-site continuing education opportunities are provided to 4th year externs at no cost to them.
Students interested in a 4th year placement should submit the following documentation in the order listed below (as one PDF document):
- Cover Letter/Letter of Intent
- Optional (see below): Including a paragraph about why you are interested in LEND
- Resume
- Graduate Transcript (unofficial will suffice)
- Three Recommendation Forms are required and can be completed via https://forms.office.com/r/RzxDS0qvYV. This form is in substitution of a letter of recommendation. The individual filling out the form should be able to speak to your clinical skills.
LEND Training Program
The Cincinnati LEND Program is part of a national network of 52 LEND programs across the country. The overall mission of LEND is to improve the health of infants, children, and adolescents with, or at risk for, neurodevelopmental and related disabilities including autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). A major focus of LEND is to increase the number of professionals with the knowledge and skills to provide evidence-based screening, diagnosis, and treatment of developmental disabilities, including ASD. Audiology externs who are also enrolled in the LEND program have a different schedule than the two externs who complete a competency-based experience. The LEND trainee will participate in clinic at one of our satellite locations on Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays where they will obtain competencies in behavioral testing, Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) Evaluations and Hearing Aids. They may have exposure to cochlear implants and bone conduction devices. However, the main focus will be completion of the LEND program. On Tuesday and Thursday mornings, the LEND trainee will be at a satellite location that is in close proximity to the Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics (DDBP). In the afternoon, students will be participating in activities related to the LEND curriculum, including leadership, interdisciplinary and family observations, and group research projects. Please visit https://www.ucucedd.org/lend/ for additional information.
If you are interested in the LEND Training Program, in addition to the materials requested above, please include a statement (paragraph) on why you are interested in LEND as part of your letter of intent along with your application packet.
