Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship: | 1.Basic Diagnostic Audiology -Proficient in pure-tone audiometry (air and bone conduction/ masking) -Capable of administering and scoring speech audiometry (SRT, WRS) -Able to perform tympanometry and acoustic reflex testing -Comfortable interpreting basic audiologic test results
2. Fundamental Hearing Aid Knowledge -Understanding of hearing aid styles and basic understanding of technology levels -Able to perform basic troubleshooting and hearing aid maintenance
3.Earmold Impression Techniques -Skilled in otoscopy and identifying contraindications for impression taking -Able to safely take deep earmold impressions using proper technique
4. Patient Communication & Counseling -Demonstrated ability to explain test results in patient-friendly terms -Comfortable discussing hearing loss, hearing aid expectations, and basic aural rehabilitation strategies
5.Clinical Documentation -Proficient in writing clear and concise clinical notes -Understands HIPAA and proper documentation standards
6.Professionalism in a Clinical Setting -Demonstrates punctuality, reliability, and respect for patients and staff -Comfortable interacting with diverse patient populations in a professional manner -Excellent interpersonal skills -The ability to prioritize and handle a high volume of patients -The ability to work and contribute to a team environment -The ability to maintain a positive and professional attitude -A strong desire to succeed and learn

Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship: | 1.Hearing Aid Selection & Fitting -Gain experience programming and fitting various hearing aid models (e.g., Oticon, ReSound, WSA etc) -Learn real-ear measurement (REM) procedures and best-fit verification/ Test box measures -Counsel patients on hearing aid use, care, and realistic expectations
2.Audiologic Sales Techniques -Develop confidence in presenting hearing aid options based on patient lifestyle and budget -Apply patient-centered communication strategies to improve case acceptance -Observe and practice closing techniques and overcoming objections in a clinical sales setting
3.Diagnostic Audiologic Testing -Conduct comprehensive pure-tone audiometry (air, bone, speech) -QuickSIN test administration -Perform immittance testing (tympanometry, acoustic reflexes) -Interpret results and make appropriate amplification recommendations
4.Earmold Impressions & Modifications -Take earmold impressions for custom hearing aids and earmolds/ musicians molds. -Learn proper otoscopy and patient safety during impression taking -Observe and assist in minor in-house earmold modifications when needed
5.Patient Management & Follow-Up -Participate in hearing aid checks, adjustments, and repairs -Provide ongoing patient support including troubleshooting, counseling, and device care -Track patient progress and satisfaction through follow-up appointments -Learn about incorporating LACE data -Assisting with walk-in repairs
6. Clinical Documentation & Workflow -Maintain accurate and efficient patient records in electronic medical systems -Learn documentation standards for insurance, manufacturer warranties, and billing
7.Community Engagement & Outreach -Assist with community hearing screenings -Presentations -Assist with community outreach at local nursing homes -Educate patients and community members on hearing health and services offered
