The University of Miami Ear Institute is in the Department of Otolaryngology at the Miller School of Medicine. Our externship offers comprehensive experience in adult and pediatric audiology, including diagnostic evaluation, fitting, and rehabilitation. Diagnostic procedures include the basic pure-tone and speech battery, immittance, otoacoustic emissions, vestibular, and evoked potential procedures. Externs will participate in a Leadership Development in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) program during their pediatric rotations. The facility also fits and manages traditional and implantable hearing devices including hearing aids, bone conduction devices, and cochlear implants. Externs will have exposure to aural rehabilitation and auditory/verbal therapy for hearing aid and cochlear implant users. The University of Miami Ear Institute also offers experiences in tinnitus/sound sensitivities, auditory processing screening, hearing conservation, and auditory brainstem implants (limited). Externs are trained in the fundamental skills necessary to be a successful clinical audiologist. Students who complete an externship at the University of Miami Ear Institute are expected to demonstrate competency in each area ensuring a seamless transition from student to clinician.
This position is only open to students eligible to enter the 4th year externship as approved by an accredited university. The externship is comprehensive in nature, and as such, combines rigorous clinical requirements with ample hands-on clinical training experience. Externs participate in all required elements of the program. Additionally, externs participate in several supplementary activities specific to enhancing their clinical education. The student should demonstrate the appropriate skills required to meet these expectations successfully.

- Externs are required to attend the 2027 Early Hearing Detection & Intervention Conference as part of their pediatric rotation, funded by the Ear Institute.
- Ear Institute externs will participate in Leadership Development in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) training during their pediatric rotation.
- Externs are encouraged to attend professional meetings and submit clinical research for presentation.
- Part-time travel to a satellite office for specific trainings. Travel time is approximately 30 minutes.
The University of Miami requires communication between externship program director and AuD institution's clinical coordinator on at least a quarterly basis. Communication via email is requested for each quarter's mid-term, while a phone or Zoom meeting is requested for each quarter's final to communicate progress, concerns, quarterly schedules, etc.
The University of Miami will not be adhering to the ACEN application and interview timeline for the 2027-2028 Externship cycle. Please review the following dates carefully:

- September 16, 2026: Deadline for submitting application materials. It is the applicant's responsibility to confirm that all materials have been received prior to the deadline. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
- September 18, 2026: Invitation to interview will be extended via email to selected candidates. Externship interviews are awarded based on applications and supporting materials.
- September 22, 2026: UM Ear Institute Externship Zoom Interviews for selected candidates. The candidate must be available from 7:45 am - 12:30 pm EST.
- September 23, 2026: Offer of externship extended to student (Approx. 4:00 PM EST or earlier)
- September 28, 2026: Deadline for the student to respond to offer of externship (11:00 AM EST).
- September 28, 2026: Subsequent offers begin 4:00 PM EST, should the position remain open.
