The University of Miami Ear Institute is in the Department of Otolaryngology at the Miller School of Medicine. Our externship offers comprehensive experience in adult and pediatric audiology, including diagnostic evaluation, fitting, and rehabilitation. Diagnostic procedures include the basic pure-tone and speech battery, immittance, otoacoustic emissions, vestibular, and evoked potential procedures. Externs will participate in a Leadership Development in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) program during their pediatric rotations. The facility also fits and manages traditional and implantable hearing devices including hearing aids, bone conduction devices, and cochlear implants. Externs will have exposure to aural rehabilitation and auditory/verbal therapy for hearing aid and cochlear implant users. The University of Miami Ear Institute also offers experiences in tinnitus/sound sensitivities, auditory processing screening, hearing conservation, and auditory brainstem implants (limited). Externs are trained in the fundamental skills necessary to be a successful clinical audiologist. Students who complete an externship at the University of Miami Ear Institute are expected to demonstrate competency in each area ensuring a seamless transition from student to clinician.
This position is only open to students eligible to enter the 4th year externship as approved by an accredited university. The externship is comprehensive in nature, and as such, combines rigorous clinical requirements with ample hands-on clinical training experience. Externs participate in all required elements of the program. Additionally, externs participate in several supplementary activities specific to enhancing their clinical education. The student should demonstrate the appropriate skills required to meet these expectations successfully.

Externs are encouraged to attend professional meetings and submit clinical research for presentation.
Part-time travel to a satellite office for specific trainings. Travel time is approximately 30 minutes.

Communication via email is requested for each quarter's mid-term, while a phone or Zoom meeting is requested for each quarter's final to communicate progress, concerns, quarterly schedules, etc.

The Division of Audiology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine is a state-of-the-art evaluation and treatment center for patients of all ages who may be experiencing hearing and/or balance difficulties. It is staffed by 6 neurotologists, 25 audiologists, 2 speech pathologists, 2 psychologists, 1 social worker and 1 deaf educator to provide a comprehensive team approach to treatment and management of hearing and balance disorders.
