Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship: | Basic otoscopy and earmold impression techniques Pure-tone and speech audiometry for adults (air, bone, and masking) Tympanometry and acoustic reflex testing Some experience with hearing aid programming software (e.g., Oticon, Phonak, Starkey, etc.) Exposure to aural rehabilitation and patient education Professionalism, punctuality, and the ability to work as part of a team |
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship: | Proficiency in advanced diagnostic testing (e.g., speech-in-noise testing, QuickSIN, and real-ear verification) Experience with pediatric evaluations Tinnitus evaluation and management strategies, including counseling and Lenire Cochlear implant evaluation and mapping Complex case management and patient-centered treatment planning Advanced hearing aid fittings using best practice protocols Workflow efficiency, documentation, and EMR use in a busy private practice Counseling strategies for patients with comorbidities, cognitive decline, or emotional challenges Business skills and patient retention strategies in private practice Confidence and independence in delivering full-scope audiologic care |
